LIPODISSOLVE
LipoDissolve (also called LipoTherapy) involves the injection of chemicals under the skin to dissolve localized pockets of fat. A combination of two chemicals is used: Phosphatidylcholine which is the main enzyme in soy lecithin (a food additive) and Sodium Deoxycholate, a bile salt made by the liver to digest fat in the diet. Together they act to break the bonds in fat cells.
The treatment, performed in the office, requires a series of injections 2-4 weeks apart and are nearly painless. Several minutes after injection an inflammatory reaction begins causing a mild itching or burning sensation in the area. This lasts 15-60 minutes. The area becomes red, usually for less than a day, and swollen for several days. There can be mild discomfort of the treated area for up to a week but does not affect normal activity.
LipoDissolve is usually performed on areas of the body with a small amount of excess fat that cannot be eliminated by diet. It can also be performed on the face, for example to minimize jowls or injected into lipomas to avoid surgical removal. It cannot be performed on those who are on "blood thinners" (i.e. Coumadin, Pradaxa) who are immunocompromised (i.e. organ transplant) on brittle diabetics, or on psychiatric patients on medications where soy products are contraindicated.
